SHIRLEY MACLAINE IS COCO CHANEL

So. When we first got wind of Project Runway moving to Lifetime Television we cringed a little. We still do.

But there may be hope yet. It seems as if Lifetime may be positioning itself to be a stylish network. First the Project Runway coup and now we hear that the channel has produced a Coco Chanel movie starring the tres-fab Shirley MacLaine.

The three-hour movie will look at the story behind the haute couture legend beginning in 1954 as Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel (MacLaine) suffers a professional and personal crisis. She reopens her famed couture house after a 15 year absence with a comeback collection that is panned by critics and customers. Of course, Chanel forges on to update her classic designs including the iconic Chanel suit and earns newfound respect.

“Coco Chanel” premieres Saturday, September 13 at 8:00pm ET/PT on Lifetime Television.

  1. It’s so funny that early in the Gay Naughts the Lifetime network was christened as “Television for women… and gay men” by one or other of the late night comedy sketch shows and it is finally fulfilling that role. While Oxygen is continuing along Oprah’s path to self-improvement and empowering women to vote for who She tells them to, Lifetime is buying syndication and original properties that are truly post-feminist while dumping the “if you see a white lady with a black eye, you must be watching Lifetime”-type of programming onto their third-tier cable LMN.
The Chanel biopic is a sign that Lifetime is gonna be a contender to the other networks next season by booking the big shows and big stars!
